Quick answer: your main water shut-off valve is usually where the water line enters your home. Look along the front foundation wall in the basement or crawl space, near the water heater or in a utility closet or garage, or, in warm climates, outside near the foundation or in a box near the street. To shut it off, turn a lever handle a quarter turn so it’s across the pipe, or turn a round wheel handle clockwise until it stops.
Where is the main water shut-off valve in a house?
It depends on your home and your climate:
- Homes with a basement: on the wall facing the street, where the water pipe comes through the foundation, often near the water meter.
- Crawl space homes: near where the pipe enters, or by the water heater.
- Homes on a concrete slab: in a utility closet, the garage, near the water heater or under the kitchen sink.
- Warm-climate homes: often outside, on an exterior wall near the foundation or near an outdoor faucet.
- Apartments and condos: often under the kitchen sink, behind an access panel, in a utility closet or near the water heater. Ask building maintenance if you can’t find it.
- At the street (curb stop): a valve in an underground box near the sidewalk or property line, often next to the water meter. It usually needs a special key and belongs to the water utility.
Tip: check your home inspection report from when you bought the house. It usually lists the shut-off location.
How do I turn off the main water shut-off valve?
First identify which type you have:
| Valve type | What it looks like | How to turn it off |
|---|---|---|
| Ball valve | A straight lever handle | Turn the lever a quarter turn (90°) so it sits across the pipe. Along the pipe means open; across means closed. |
| Gate valve | A round wheel handle, like an outdoor faucet | Turn the wheel clockwise (righty-tighty) several times until it stops. Don’t force it. |
Then open a faucet on the lowest floor to check the water has stopped and to drain the pipes.
Valve stuck, leaking or breaking off? Old gate valves often seize, and forcing them can snap the stem and make things worse. Call a plumber: +1 (877) 270-1778
Which way do you turn the main water valve off?
For a wheel handle (gate valve), turn it clockwise to close it and counterclockwise to open it. For a lever (ball valve), the direction doesn’t matter: a quarter turn so the lever is perpendicular to the pipe closes it.
When should you shut off your main water?
- A pipe has burst or water is leaking and you can’t stop it at the fixture. See what to do when a pipe bursts.
- Before plumbing repairs on a fixture without its own shut-off.
- When you’ll be away for a long time in winter. Shutting off the water and draining the lines reduces the risk of a burst while you’re gone.
- During a hard freeze, if a pipe has already frozen and might split as it thaws. See frozen pipes: what to do.
What if the main water shut-off valve is leaking or won’t turn?
- Don’t use a wrench to force a stuck wheel valve. Gate valves that haven’t been turned in years can break inside.
- A small drip from the valve stem can sometimes be stopped by gently tightening the packing nut just under the handle, a small turn at a time.
- If it’s leaking badly or won’t close, call a plumber. They can shut off the water at the curb stop and replace the main valve, usually with a quarter-turn ball valve that’s easier to use in an emergency.
Who is responsible for the main water shut-off valve?
Generally, the homeowner is responsible for the main shut-off valve and pipes on the house side of the water meter, and the water utility is responsible for the curb stop and meter. Rules vary by city, so check with your water utility before working on anything at the street.
Find your valve before you need it
Most people only look for the shut-off valve in an emergency, while water is spreading. Take five minutes now:
- Find the valve and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is.
- Clear boxes and clutter away from it.
- Turn it off and on once to make sure it moves, then open a faucet to confirm the water stops.
- Tag it with a bright label: “MAIN WATER SHUT-OFF”.
If it’s stuck or very old, have a plumber replace it before winter. That’s much easier than dealing with it during a burst pipe or a cold snap. See also what temperature pipes freeze at.
